Ideal Theatre

Baltimore is a filmmaking town. It's full of DIY movie and video creators.

The old Salvation Army location on the Avenue is going through some renovations right now and you can see the old movie theater underneath.

The Avenue supported two theaters next to each other, back in the day, which is hard to believe in today's era of Netflix and You Tube. People actually went out to see films! Serious.

The Ideal Theatre was open from 1908 to 1963.

Some readers of the Mobtown Shank are producing a movie. Production starts next month. Serious!

We'll keep you posted on the progress and the release party.

The Apprentice

The Greenmount School has an apprenticeship program that gives kids a leg up with some real world education.

Our apprentice started today!

I can't wait to say, "You're Fired."

To Donald Trump.

Kids Books Lead To The Darndest Things

Tonight is the discussion for Baltimore Blues at POP, 7pm.

The next book in our Reading Club Series is The Golden Compass, and it goes on sale for 15% for the month of February.

Read it before the movie comes out! Because all sorts of weird things happen after they turn kids books into movies!

Largehearted Boy Gives You 50 CDs

On Monday, January 29, our friend largehearted boy turns 5 years old! Well, okay, he himself doesn't turn 5, but his blog celebrates its 5th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, lhb (that's what we like to call him around the Atomic offices, "lhb," catchy, no?) is giving away 50 CDs to one lucky person, 5 graphic novels to another ever-so-slightly less-lucky person, and 4 CDs each to 4 other a minutely-less-lucky people.

To enter, all you have to do is go to his blog and leave a comment on this post.

Contest ends at Midnight, January 28th, so what are you waiting for?

Don't forget to wish him a happy anniversary while you're there!

New Dunnys @ POP

The new Dunnys Azteca are on sale today over at POP! Unfortunately we weren't able to get a release party together for tonight, but look out for a trading party later on this month. I would imagine that some tequila will be involved.

We will be closed on Monday for inventory here at Atomic Books.

Ideal Date

In the latest issue of BUST, which is all about love, John Waters talks about his ideal date:

I always thought a glamorous date would be robbing a 7-Eleven with somebody. But not in real life! I wouldn't do that, but I love the idea of doing it and then running and then, like, having a couple of drinks and counting the money and having sex. That would a be a fun night.

A Date with John Waters, his love song compilation CD, comes out in a couple of weeks, just in time for Valentine's Day!

Baby I Could Never Steal You From Another

I can't believe the Weather Blog stole my title idea!

Now, I'm not a huge football fan, but I love love love when the Baltimore Ravens get on the path to the Superbowl because this city turns purple. Hopefully they'll win today and continue on and we'll look more like Gotham City every day.

Speaking of which, they may be shooting scenes for the new Dark Knight movie right here in Baltimore.

Now, I'm not a huge Christian Bale fan...oh wait, I am. I totally am.

How's It Going?

And how are those New Year's Resolutions coming along?

Was one of them about reading more books? We like that one. And we can help!

largehearted boy is going into his 4th year of his "52 Books, 52 Weeks" series, and once again we'll be sponsoring him.

But this year, if you'd like to check out the current book he's on by ordering it from us, you can enter this coupon code "LHB001" and get 15% off that title.

Shank Reading Club 2007 - Firsts!

One of the issues we came up against when choosing our list of classic graphic novels last year was that a lot of titles we'd like to have put on the list weren't really stand alone books but part of a multi-volume series.

So for the New Year, we're going to explore first books from their respective series! But not only in the comic format - we're delving deep into genre fiction, where multi-volume epics and chronicles are the norm. I think you'll find that with all of the coming year's selections, these books all stray in interesting ways from their given "categories":

Jan - Baltimore Blues
Feb - The Golden Compass
March - Buddha V1: Kapilavastu
April - Sandman: Preludes & Nocturnes
May - Neuromancer
June - Hellblazer: Original Sins
July - Cerebus
August - The Invisibles V1: Say You Want a Revolution
September - Liquor
October - The Ring
November - Lone Wolf & Cub V1
December - American Elf V1

We'll be meeting the last Wednesday of the month, as before, at atomic POP, 3620 Falls Rd, starting at 7pm. All books will be 15% for their month!

Go 2007!
