First Fridays - GH Practice Party

That is a photo of my callus. My Guitar Hero callus.

First Fridays here in Hampden is when a lot of the businesses have special events, sales or just stay open later than usual.

We didn't get it together this month in time to have another Guitar Hero Competition over at atomic POP, so we'll just stay open a little later and have a casual Guitar Hero Practice Party.

I will crush you later.

Locals Schmocals

People often ask us where our "local authors" section is. We don't have one. They're just in with everyone and everything else, you know, like they're normal authors.

This month alone, some of the best new stuff out nationally are by local creators!

Kevin Sherry's I'm the Biggest Thing in the Ocean
Larry Doyle's I Love You, Beth Cooper
Dan Deacon's Spiderman of the Rings
Double Dagger's Ragged Rubble
Brian Ralph's Sea Corpse Print
Daniel Higgs' Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot

Baltimore has had factory-levels of activity recently, and there's a lot more coming out this year that we're very excited about. What's happening next?

Nice Motorhead Shirt

The latest issue of Fretboard Journal has a great big article on our favorite banjo player & maker, Pete Ross.

I was just realizing today that all of my banjo calluses are gone...replaced by one single Guitar Hero callus. I need to get back to my banjo.

Honfest 2007 - Festival Check

Let's keep this straight:

Honfest is in June. It's 2 days this year!

Hampdenfest is in September.

We don't have anything to do with the organizing of Honfest. DO NOT CALL US.

Here's a handy schedule of the coming Festival Season IN ORDER:

May Balticon
June Honfest
July Artscape
July Otakon
August Horrorfind Weekend
September Baltimore Comic Con
September Hampdenfest
September Baltimore Book Festival
September (usually) High Zero Festival
October Small Press Expo
October Mid-Atlantic Radical Bookfair

This is not a complete list by any means. Every neighborhood/school/block in this town has its own festival.

Memorial Day Weekend

We will be closed on Monday for Memorial Day.

Atomic Knit Night is canceled for Sunday afternoon as well!

Harry Potter Cosplay

I just realized that the release of the new Harry Potter is going to coincide with Otakon in Baltimore this year.

Wizards, Goth-Lolis and this guy, all in the Inner Harbor.

Tek Jansen #1

Coming soon...but who knows when?? It's already late late late.

Oh Colbert, the universe needs you NOW.

Zines come and go constantly, but the classics are asked about long after they cease publication in the vain hope that perhaps there's a new issue.

There are a few titles that we get asked about again and again. So often, infact, that we even put them in our FAQ.

Dishwasher is one of those most asked about zines. If you want to talk about zine classics, it's right up there if not at the top. Pete Jordan had a goal - to wash dishes in all 50 states of the US. And to write about it.

Dishwasher ceased publication around 2001. But now, he's back, with a book!

And he'll be here at atomic POP on the 24th, 7pm.

And for this occassion, and our 15th anniversary, let's all walk down memory lane and try to think of what else would be in that Top Zine list.

We'll be posting our list soon.

Tickets On Sale Now

We have tickets already!

Sidewalk Sale!

This Saturday we're having a big sidewalk sale at Atomic Books. 50-80% off books, toys, DVDs! You know we rarely have sales, but it's our 15th anniversary this year and and we have a few years of Spring Cleaning to catch up on.

Hopefully it won't rain.

Rain date is next weekend.

Anti 9 to 5 Guide

Ladies, thinking of leaving the 9 to 5 grind and wondering what the options are?

This Wednesday, we'll have Michelle Goodman, author of the Anti 9 to 5 Guide over at atomic POP (3620 Falls Rd). Starts at 7pm!

Fat Elvis Has Left The Building

It's the end of an era! Fat Elvis was one of the most unique stores on the Avenue, here in Hampden.

But coming soon to take that location will be 9th Life, moving down from it's second floor space above Milbrook Antiques.

Lovely Yarns has also moved to a first floor location.

Sugar is open!

Reach Into the Dolphin!

It's First Friday here in Hampden, where many shops will be open later than their usual hours and special events abound.

Tonight at Frazier's (919 W 36th St) is a Ride the Feast Benefit by Team Atomic with Secret Crush Society, King Belvedere, Kallisti Tribal Dancers, Pariah Pirahna and the winner of the guitar raffle will be announced.

Tomorrow is free comic book day!

Buffy 3

The new Buffy is in and we'll be meeting at the Hon Bar, 1002 W 36th St, shortly after 7pm, to read and discuss.

OOoo, Willow cover!

Maryland Film Festival

This Friday and Saturday, May 4th & 5th, we'll be set up at the Maryland Film Festival (across the street from The Charles Theatre).

Check out our schedule of local zinesters and film buff authors.

Want to know what to see? Here's a handy list of Skizz and Eric's picks of the Festival.

Festival starts on Thursday and ends on Sunday!

The Shank Reading Club book for May is Neuromancer, William Gibson's classic.

15% off for the month, and we get together on the last Wednesday of May over at atomic POP, to discuss, and drink and possibly dress up.
