Free Comic Book Day - May 1!

Saturday, May 1 is Free Comic Book Day.

So what that means is that comic shops all over the country will be giving away specially made free comics. And so will we (even though we're not really a traditional comic book store).

In fact, we've created the second issue of our free annual comic, Mutant! #1. This issue will actually be a pack of mini-comics, featuring work by:
- Ben Claassen III
- Chris Day
- Eamon Espey
- Noel Freibert
- Everett Gee
- Jordan Jeffries
- Dina Kelberman
- Hawk Krall
- Ryan Onorato
- Jon Powell
- Benn Ray
- Noah van Sciver
- Ben Stiegler

We'll also have an awesome free comic you most likely won't be able to find anywhere else in the area: Dope Flounder (featuring Jesse Reklaw, Sean Christensen, Tom Lechner, David Wien, Nicole Georges, and Ian Sundahl).

We'll also be giving away free copies of:
Tick #1
Weathercraft (Fantagraphics)
Yow! The John Stanley Library (Drawn & Quarterly)
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero
Iron Man/Super Nova
Iron Man/Thor
Owly & Friend…

Celebrated Summer Joins The Atomic Books Family

For those not in the know, this Saturday is a special day for music fans. It's Record Store Day!

Modifying the Free Comic Book Day celebration concept (which is coming up on Saturday May 1 - and aside from several dozen different free titles we'll be giving out, we'll also be publishing the second issue of Mutant!, plus tons of sale stuff and special comics, etc.), Record Store Day is:
...a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally.

This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. So what this means for us is this year we'll get up early and trek over to our favorite r…

Bars, Bars, Everywhere!

The Nutty Pub, on Chestnut Ave, has finally sold and will reopen as this in June.

Zissimo's, 1023 West 36th Street, has a brand new entertainment permit and will be hosting Hampden's Happiest Hour tomorrow evening from 5pm-9pm, which benefits the Hampden Community Council.

And McCabe's, 3845 Falls Road, under new ownership, is to re-open at the end of April! Yay!

Summertime is going to be full of new drinking adventures.

Benn In The Wild

Benn will be on WYPR's (88.1FM) The Signal today at noon to talk about some Spring reading suggestions. Listen live or check out the mp3.

And then next Saturday, Team Atomic, the charity bike team we support, is hosting a Chili Cookoff to benefit Moveable Feast. Our riders will be competing against other bike teams and their supporters for prizes and, most importantly, bragging rights! Benn is one of the celebrity judges, along with Gutter Magazine's food writer Heather Halsey and Moveable Feast Executive Chef, Damon Hersh. (All judges are open to bribery; all bribes donated back to Moveable Feast!) Ten bucks gets you samples of up to 10 different chilis, an assortment of other foods and drinks, and the knowledge that you’re helping a really cool charity. For more information, contact Rebecca at aberrebe AT

4/17: Team Atomic Chili Invitational
